MANILA, Philippines – State weather forecasters expect the first August typhoon to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday, August 5.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Typhoon Soudelor, currently hovering over the Pacific Ocean near Guam, is likely to enter the PAR on Wednesday morning or evening.

At 4 pm on Monday, the typhoon packed maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers/hour (km/h) and gusts of up to 210 km/h, PAGASA Weather Specialist I Robert Badrina told Rappler.

It will be given the name “Hanna” when it enters the PAR.

However, Soudelor is not expected to make landfall in the Philippines. It will likely only pass over the country’s water bodies as it moves towards Taiwan.

The Philippines will only be affected by the typhoon’s intensification of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, said Badrina.

Stronger monsoon rains are thus likely in Visayas and Mindanao on Wednesay, when the typhoon enters the PAR.

Daily forecast

In the meantime, only light to moderate rains are expected in Mindanao, Western Visayas and the province of Palawan on Tuesday, August 4.

The rest of the country will experience only isolated thunderstorms, says the PAGASA Monday evening bulletin.

Winds throughout the country will be light to moderate resulting in slight to moderate ocean waters.
