MANILA, Philippines – The tropical storm outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) intensified into a typhoon on Tuesday morning, July 5.

The typhoon, internationally named Nepartak, is expected to enter PAR on Tuesday afternoon. It will be given the local name Butchoy.

As of 10 am, Nepartak was 1,570 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora, moving northwest at 30 kilometers per hour (km/h).

It has maximum winds of 120 km/h and gustiness of up to 150 km/h.

The typhoon is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains to areas within its 300-km diameter.

On Monday, July 4, state weather bureau PAGASA said the typhoon will not hit any province since it is moving upward in the direction of Taiwan.

It will, however, enhance the southwest monsoon. In the past, enhanced monsoon rains triggered floods in the country.

PAGASA is expected to release a more detailed forecast of areas to be affected by heavy monsoon rains once the typhoon is inside PAR. – Rappler.com
