Typhoon Butchoy inside PAR; monsoon affecting Luzon, Visayas

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Nepartak entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) at 2 pm on Tuesday, July 5, and was given the local name Butchoy.

As of 4 pm, Butchoy was 1,325 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora, still moving northwest at 30 kilometers per hour (km/h).

The typhoon strengthened and now has maximum winds of 140 km/h and gustiness of up to 170 km/h.

Butchoy will not make landfall in the Philippines, but it is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, which is affecting Southern Luzon and the Visayas.

In its bulletin issued 5 pm on Tuesday, state weather bureau PAGASA said light to moderate rains and thunderstorms are expected in the Visayas, as well as in the regions of Bicol, Mimaropa, Davao, and Caraga, on Wednesday, July 6.

The rest of the country, including Metro Manila, will have isolated rains or thunderstorms.

PAGASA also warned that coastal waters will be moderate to rough in the Visayas, Mindanao, Southern Luzon, and the eastern parts of Northern and Central Luzon.
