Carina slightly intensifies as it heads for Northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Carina slightly intensified late Saturday evening, July 30, with several provinces still under signal numbers 1 and 2.

In its bulletin issued 11 pm on Saturday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Carina now has maximum winds of up to 75 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gustiness of up to 90 km/h.

Moderate to heavy rains are expected within the 400-km diameter of the tropical storm.

As of 10 pm, Carina was 315 km east of Casiguran, Aurora, moving northwest toward Northern Luzon at a slightly faster 20 km/h.

The following provinces are under signal number 2:

• Isabela
• Ilocos Norte
• Cagayan including Babuyan Group of Islands

These provinces, meanwhile, are under signal number 1:

• Ifugao
• Apayao
• Kalinga
• Mt. Province
• Abra
• Quirino
• Aurora

Areas under storm warning signals should be on alert for possible floods and landslides.

PAGASA warned that there could also be rains in the regions of Calabarzon, Central Luzon, and the rest of Cagayan Valley, as well as the provinces of Benguet and Camarines Norte.

Meanwhile, coastal waters in the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon are rough to very rough.

Carina is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday, August 1. Its international name is Nida.
