MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – It will be a rainy week ahead for many parts of the country, due to the combined effects of tropical storm Emong and the Southwest Monsoon.

Emong has been upgraded to a tropical storm as it moves just east of Luzon state weather bureau PAGASA said Tuesday, June 18.

Emong was spotted 460 km east of Isabela, Cagayan (17.3°N, 126.5°E) as of 10 am Tuesday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h and gusts of 80 km/h, and moving north northwest at a speed of 19 km/h.

It is also estimated to have moderate to heavy rainfall within its 400 km diameter, the bureau said.

Fishermen are warned of big waves in the seas in northern and eastern parts of Luzon, and in western parts of Southern Luzon.

The tropical storm is still far to directly affect any part of the country. However, it is enhancing the effects of the monsoon, commonly called the ‘habagat,’ bringin moderate to occasionally heavy rain and thunderstorms to southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

In particular, cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected in the following regions:

  • Central Luzon
  • Metro Manila
  • Calabarzon
  • Mimaropa
  • Bicol
  • Visayas
  • Northern Mindanao
  • Caraga

The rest of the archipelago can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain.

Emong is likely to intensify in the next 24 to 48 hours, the bureau added.

The bureau said the combined effects of Emong and the monsoon will likely last until Friday, June 21. The storm is expected to be 470 km east of Basco, Batanes by Wednesday morning, June 19.

As the weather system moves up, it will also pull up the monsoon rains, PAGASA forecaster Gener Quitlong told Rappler.

As the week progresses the rain will soon affect Central and Northern Luzon. On the other hand, Quitlong said, weather will improve in the Visayas, particularly Central Visayas.

On Monday evening, June 17, heavy rain caused flash flooding and heavy traffic in many parts of Metro Manila.
