'Fabian' will not directly affect the Philippines, PAGASA says

LEAVING SATURDAY? Tropical depression Fabian is not expected to stay long in the Philippines. Satellite image from PAGASA

MANILA, Philippines – The state weather bureau on Thursday, June 20, said another tropical depression has formed within the Philippines, but is expected to stay for only a few days.

Tropical depression Fabian, which formed off Batangas, will likely exit Philippine waters by Saturday morning, June 22, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

It will also have no direct effect on the Philippines, PAGASA said.

The tropical depression will, however, enhance the southwest monsoon. Moderate to occasionally heavy rain will pour in the western part of Luzon, particularly Palawan, also because of Fabian.

At 11 am on Thursday, PAGASA spotted Fabian 290 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales. The state weather bureau said it packs maximum winds of 55 kilometers near the center, and moves north-northwest at 11 kph.

PAGASA said within its 300-kilometer diameter, Fabian will likely bring moderate to heavy rain.

Fabian entered the Philippines on the same day that Emong, a tropical storm, left the country. Emong enhanced the effects of the monsoon, bringing rain to parts of Luzon and causing flood in Metro Manila. – Paterno Esmaquel II/Rappler.com
