MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Typhoon Huaning (Soulik) maintained its strength, as the state weather bureau kept the Batanes Group of Islands under Storm Warning Signal No. 1.

In its 5 am update Thursday, July 11, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Huaning packed maximum winds of 175 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 210 km/h.

It was located  910 km east of Itbayat, Batanes (22.0°N, 132.0°E) as of 4 am Thursday.

PAGASA, as in its 11 pm update Wednesday, July 10, kept Batanes under Signal No. 1. This means the islands will experience winds of 45 to 60 km/h within 36 hours. The bureau didn’t raise storm signals in other areas.

Huaning will move in a west-northwest direction at 20 km/h, PAGASA said. It is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Saturday, July 13.

It is forecast at the following areas in the next few days:

  • 550 km northeast of Itbayat by Friday morning, July 12;
  • 420 km north of Itbayat by Saturday morning; and
  • 710 km northwest of Itbayat by Sunday morning, July 14, or outside the PAR.

PAGASA will issue its next update on Huaning at 11 am on Thursday. – Paterno Esmaquel II/Rappler.com
