Nando now a tropical storm

MANILA, Philippines – Nando (international codename Kong-Rey) has intensified and has been upgraded into a tropical storm Monday, Aug 26, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

Nando was spotted 270 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora (16.8°N, 125.0°E) as of 4 pm, carrying maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 80 km/h, the bureau said in its 5 pm bulletin.

Storm warning signal #1 is in effect over the following provinces:

• Batanes
• Cagayan
• Apayao
• Isabela

These areas are forecast to have rains with gusty winds, accompanied by moderate to rough seas.

Winds between 45-60 km/h can be expected in these areas within 36 hours.

The system is forecast to carry heavy to intense rainfall (10-20 mm/h) within its 400 km diameter, the bureau said.

Nando is currently forecast to move northwest at a speed of 15 km/h, and is expected to be 160 km southeast of Basco, Batanes by Tuesday afternoon.

It is expected to continue enhancing the southwest monsoon, bringing light to occasionally heavy rain and thunderstorms over Southern Luzon.

Bicol, Mimaropa, and the province of Aurora are expected to experience moderate to occasionally heavy rain, possibly triggering flash floods and landslides, the bureau said in its 24-hour forecast.

The rest of Luzon will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rain, while the Visayas and Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain.
