MANILA, Philippines – A low pressure area (LPA) is brewing near the southern end of the Philippines.

State weather bureau PAGASA reported that at 4 am, Saturday, January 11, they spotted the LPA 680 kilometers east of General Santos City in Mindanao.

A LPA, or a region with a lower atmospheric pressure than surrounding locations, can develop into a storm.

Provinces of the Davao region have been alerted by PAGASA to prepare for the approaching LPA.

This region, as well as Caraga provinces in the northeastern part of Mindanao, will be drenched by moderate to heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms brought by cloudy skies. This may trigger landslides and flashfloods.

Visayas and the rest of Mindanao will experience light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms throughout the day.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Luzon is still experiencing a northeast monsoon.

Weather Philippines issued a violet, red and orange alert over Eastern, Central and Northern Mindanao, Eastern and Central Visayas because of expected heavy rain caused by the LPA.

Light rain will fall upon Cagayan Valley and the province of Aurora. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies will loom over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon bringing isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms.

It will be a windy Saturday for the entire country because of moderate to strong winds blowing in from the northeast. Thus, coastal waters everywhere will be moderate to rough. – Rappler.com
