MANILA, Philippines – Metro Manila experienced one of its coolest temperatures early Sunday morning, January 26, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
The bureau told Rappler they recorded a temperature of 15.8ºC at 4:50 am Sunday, at the Science Garden station in Quezon City.
This is just 0.7 degrees shy of the 15.1ºC recorded on 4 February 1987 and 30 December 1988, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the metropolis.
The previous record low temperature recorded in the metropolis, the bureau said, was 16.9ºC, on Saturday, January 25, also at the Science Garden station.
Meanwhile, up in Baguio City, the bureau recorded 9.5ºC at around 6:10 am Sunday.
However, this was not the city’s lowest recorded temperature this season – a chilly 8.1ºC last January 19 – and still a bit warmer than the city’s record 6.3ºC last 18 January 1961.
The bureau said the unusually cool temperatures is still caused by the northeast monsoon, or the amihan, which is expected to last until the first few weeks of February.
The monsoon is bringing cold air from northeast Asia, down to areas such as the Philippines.
PAGASA also said the entire country is expected to experience cooler temperatures for the next few weeks. – Rappler.com
