MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The low pressure area east of Mindanao has developed into a tropical depression overnight and is now named Seniang, state weather forecasters said Sunday, December 28.

As of 10 am Sunday, Seniang was located 210 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center, state weather bureau PAGASA said in its 11 am bulletin.

The storm is carrying moderate to heavy rainfall (7-15 mm/h) within its 300 km diameter, the bureau said.

Public storm warning signal number 1 has been raised over the following areas:

  • Southern Leyte
  • Bohol
  • Siquijor
  • Surigao del Norte
  • Surigao del Sur
  • Agusan del Norte
  • Agusan del Sur
  • Davao del Norte
  • Davao Oriental
  • Compostella Valley
  • Camiguin Island
  • Misamis Oriental
  • Bukidnon
  • Dinagat Province

People in these provinces should expect occasional rain with occasional gusty winds, the bureau said.

The storm is forecast to move west at 11 km/h, and is expected to make landfall near Tandag, Surigao del Sur, early Monday, December 29.

PAGASA’s forecast track shows the storm is likely to cross Mindanao in the next few days.

The storm has not yet been given an international codename.

Meanwhile, in its 5 am daily weather forecast, PAGASA said the rest of Mindanao, the Visayas, and Bicol can expect cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, while northern and central Luzon will have cloudy skies with light rain.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, meanwhile, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rain.

“Residents in low lying and mountainous areas of the provinces with PSWS#1 as well as over Eastern Visayas and the rest of Mindanao especially Caraga Region are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides,” the bureau warned.

The next bulletin on Seniang will be issued at 5 pm. – Rappler.com
