MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) ­- ­­Typhoon Chedeng (Maysak) slowed down but maintained its strength as it moved closer to the Philippines, state weather bureau PAGASA reported.

As of 4 pm Thursday, April 2, Chedeng was located at 970 km east southeast of Virac, Catanduanes (13.0°N, 133.2°E).

Chedeng is expected move northwest at 15 km/h, slower than its last recorded pace and direction of of 19 km/h west northwest, the weather bureau said.

Public Storm Warning Signal number one will be hoisted over the Bicol provinces Thursday evening, instead of Thursday afternoon, PAGASA said.  

“Once PSWS #1 is hoisted, sea travel over these areas will be suspended,” the weather bureau said.

The typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 210 km/h.

But the typhoon is “expected to weaken further as it moves slowly towards the eastern seaboard of Luzon,” PAGASA said. 

As of 4pm Thursday, Chedeng is expected to make landfall over the eastern coast of the Aurora – Isabela area Sunday late morning, April 5.

Moderate to Heavy rainfall may be expected within 150-200 km radius of the typhoon.

The weather bureau said storm surges and sea surface waves of less than 3 meters may be expected over the eastern coasts of Quezon, Aurora and Isabela.

 

In Baler, Aurora – a popular surfing spot, about 10,000 tourists checked in resorts along the bay were advised to leave as early as Friday, April 3.

The following weather conditions may be expected over the Holy Week from April 2 to April 5, according to PAGASA:

  • Eastern Luzon will experience good weather Thursday and Friday
  • Fair weather (warm and humid) with the possibility of isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms over the central and western sections of the country is expected until Friday
  • For Saturday to Sunday: rains and gusty winds will be experienced over eastern coast of Luzon while stormy weather is expected over Central-Northern Luzon by Sunday. 
  • The greater Metro Manila area will have occasional rains and gusty winds while the rest of the country will have warm and humid conditions 
  • Rough to very rough sea conditions will prevail over the eastern seaboard of Luzon, which could be dangerous for all sea vessels
