MANILA, Philippines – A tropical storm spotted thousands of kilometers east of Mindanao may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday, May 7, said state weather bureau PAGASA.

In its Tuesday evening bulletin, it said the storm, with international name “Noul,” was 1,430 kilometers east of Surigao del Norte – still outside the PAR – at 4 pm that day.

Once it enters the PAR, the storm will be given the name “Dodong.”

At 4 pm on Tuesday, the storm was packing winds of 85 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center and gusts of up to 100 km/h. It is predicted to move west at a speed of 6 km/h.

Noul is currently too far to affect the Philippine landmass. Independent weather monitoring group Weather Philippines says Noul’s effects will likely not be felt in the Philippines for the next 4 to 5 days.

But it said communities in Eastern Visayas and Eastern Luzon, including Bicol region, should closely monitor the storm.

Winds all over the archipelago are likely to be light to moderate leading to slight to moderate seas.
