MANILA, Philippines – A new moth species discovered in the Philippines was named after a Filipino entomologist from the University of the Philippines in Los Baños.

The moth species, found in 2012 in Benguet, Mountain Province is now called Cleora aimeelynnae after UPLB Museum of Natural History (UPLB MNH) moths and spiders curator Dr. Aimee Lynn B. Dupo. Dupo is also a professor at the UPLB.

The species is a member of the Geometridae family of Order Lepidoptera.

Named by French scientist Claude Tautel of the Entomology Department of Systematics and Evolution of the Museum National d’Historie Naturelle, the species’ habitats are primary forests of low mountains and middle elevations from 1,650 to 2,100 meters above sea level.

The Cleora aimeelynnae’s forewing is 20 mm and has a wingspan of 34 mm.

Tautel also named three species of moths from the Philippines namely the Celenna lourensi, Problepsis buwani, and Craspedosis ifugao. – Rappler.com
