NCR wins overall champions in Palarong Pambansa swimming, continues annual domination

GOLD MEDALLIST. Catherine Bondad of NCR raked in several gold medals at the Palarong Pambansa swim events. Isabel Rodriguez.

DAGUPAN, Pangasinan – 10 of the 12 gold medals in this year’s Palarong Pambansa swimming finals went to the National Capital Region.

In the last day of the Palaro 2012 swimming tournament, it is not surprising that NCR took home most of the medals in their continuing dominion in the sport. Only two regions got a taste of gold: Central Luzon topped the 50M elementary boys division and Ilocos won the 400M elementary girls relay.

There were, however, no records broken today.

Axel Ngui from NCR continued his winning streak with another two golds today from the 200M freestyle event and the 400M freestyle relay event.

He also attempted to break the 100M freestyle record by Kendrick Yu (54.57, 2005) in his first jump for the 400M relay, but was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, Ngui has been raking in medals– all gold medals in every swimming event he has joined since the start of this year’s Palaro.

Crowd favorites Catherine Bondad and Delia Cordero, both from NCR, also battled for the 200M freestyle win.

Bondad, a Palaro Outsanding Athlete for the past two years, and Cordero, who have broken two records this year, have been fighting for first place, throughout the week.

In a surprising turn of events, Cordero clocked in at 2:18.76 while Bondad timed at 2:15.07 taking the finals gold.

I am so happy because there are so many people who supported me, especially God, my Coach, and my friends. I thank them because they didn’t forget me and they gave me strength)”, Bondad said.

Sana po makabreak po ako nang record (next year), sana po mabreak ko lahat po nang records (I hope I break a record, I hope I break all the records).”

NCRAA was named overall swim champions.
