MANILA, Philippines – The women’s Philippine football team, also known as the Malditas, won the LA Viking Cup Tuesday, November 27 in Los Angeles, after defeating the California Cosmos 4-3 in penalties.

The Malditas tied the Cosmos 1-1 in regular time of the finals, but outshot the professional America-based squad in penalty kicks to take home the title — posting a final score of 5-4.

The Philippine team, consisting both of local and international players with Filipino heritage, bested the other participating teams of the tournament which included Metro Stars, Leon and the Cosmos. Women national teams and local teams around the world are invited to participate in the friendly tournament.

The win comes after a week-long training by the squad in Los Angeles, where they hosted clinics and recruited about 30 players there, in an effort to find potential overseas talent for the national team. It also follows less than 24 hours after the thrilling victory of the men’s Philippine football team over powerhouse Vietnam in the Suzuki Cup.

Soon after the victory, Malditas team captain Marielle Benitez turned to Twitter to celebrate the win, posting, “Yeaaahhhhh!!! LA VIking Cup Champions 2012!! Malditas!!! Sooooo proud!! Battle and Bleed Pilipinas!!!” – Rappler.com
