MANILA, Philippines — One of the most recognizable faces of volleyball three years ago is back to lead the Philippine national women’s volleyball team.

Former University of Santo Tomas superstar Angeli Tabaquero has been named team captain of the RP Bomberinas, a tweet by the official account of the national squad confirmed Sunday night, March 17.

Tabaquero won two championships with the Tigresses in UAAP seasons 69 and 72, with her trademark attacks and on-court swag endearing the five-foot-seven charmer to a lot of UST fans.

After taking a break, Tabaquero returned to Shakey’s V-League action in the Season 9 Open Conference, suiting up for collegiate archrival Far Eastern University as a guest player.

Tabaquero showed few signs of rust for the Lady Tamaraws and even posted a then-tournament record of 29 points off 24 hits, four blocks and an ace in a five-set loss to Philippine Navy.

The Philippine National Volleyball Team Task Force — the group spearheading the drive to build a national crew from scratch — will announce the 28-man pool that will comprise the country’s delegation to international tournaments Monday, March 18. – Rappler.com
