Global FC win UFL crown via 1-1 draw vs Loyola Meralco
MANILA, Philippines - Global FC are the newly crowned United Football League (UFL) champions after a 1-1 draw against Loyola Meralco Sparks.
Although they end the season sharing the points (41 each) with Kaya FC, Global won the title due to a superior goal difference.
Both sides were deadlocked in the first 45 minutes but were unable to score.
Hyo Il Kim had a chance for Loyola Meralco early in the match, but his shot from a James Younghusband header was wide.
Global then followed up with several opportunities via Alex Obiang's volley of a Carli de Murga cross that went high. A three-man counter of Obiang, Yu Hoshide and Izo Elhabbib again pestered the Loyola Meralco defense but Izo's final ball was wide.
Phil Younghusband had a golden chance in the 20th minute, but saw his shot only hitting the side netting. Global goalkeeper Jerome Etoundi kept Global at bay with 4 critical saves to deny Loyola Meralco the lead in the 32nd minute.
Come the second half, Global relied on Patrick Reichelt to supply the attack from the right flank, but Loyola Meralco's defence held firm against a Global side hoping to score.
Global's topscorer Izo Elhabbib scored for his team in the 65th minute after his header crept inside Ref Cuaresma's goal.
Loyola Meralco then equalized in the 75th minute from Byeong Yeol Jeong with a header from a corner kick to set up a nervy finish between both sides that saw David Basa almost scoring the winner in the 82nd minute, but his header sailed wide.
At the end, Global triumphed with the 1-1 scoreline to win the title. This is now their third title in the UFL after winning the second division in 2010 undefeated and the UFL Cup in 2011. -Rappler.com
