MANILA, Philippines – Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra arrived in Manila on Wednesday, August 1, as part of the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s Trophy Tour.

Spoelstra made history in 2012 when he led the Miami Heat to their second NBA crown, making him the first Asian American head coach the championship. He is also the league’s first Asian American head coach.

His mother hails from San Pablo, Laguna.

Later today, Spoelstra will be watching Game 5 of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup conference finals series. Rain or Shine leads the best-of-seven series, 3-1, and hopes to bring home the crown today — their first in franchise history.

Spoelstra is also set to tour different malls in Metro Manila, where the Heat’s championship trophy will be put on display. He will be conducting an NBA 3X clinic at the Jose Rizal University on Thursday, August 3 for teenage boys and girls.

Spoelstra plans to pay a visit to a Smart-Gilas practice session as well later this week, according to a tweet by national team head coach Chot Reyes.

He will be in the country until Sunday, August 5. – Rappler.com
