WATCH: Steph Curry meets 4-year-old fan with cancer

MANILA, Philippines – He’s the reigning Most Valuable Player of the NBA, but after Thursday, February 25, he’s also the MVP in the heart of a young fan.

Prior to the Golden State Warriors’ game against the Miami Heat, Steph Curry met a 4-year-old boy with cancer. 

The fan, Shawn Kennedy, travelled with his family from Niagara Falls, New York and received the shoes Curry wore during his pre-game routine. 

“Keep being brave,” Curry wrote on a sneaker before handing it to Kennedy and taking both him and his brother to the Warriors’ locker room, per The Associated Press.

Kennedy suffers from a rare brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Giloma, the report indicates. A friend of Warriors head coach Steve Kerr heard about Kennedy’s situation, and plans were arranged for the meeting with Curry.

“I didn’t expect anything like this,” said Nicole Vathy, Shawn’s mother, per The AP. “He’s going to go home and talk about this all day. He really is. He’s not going to stop talking about it.”

Mike Esposito, the friend of Kerr’s who heard about Kennedy’s condition, also found out that the kid is a Warriors fan.

“I emailed Steve and within an hour, half-an-hour, he emailed back and said ‘We’ve got you,’” he said.

According to Kennedy’s mother, her son’s condition is “getting somewhat better over time.” The 4-year-old is scheduled for more tests at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in April for further evaluations.

Curry went on to score 42 points as Golden State beat Miami. – Rappler.com
