Report: Garnett possibly retiring; Bucks’ Middleton out 6 months
Minnesota may have to look for a new mentor on the roster, while Milwaukee hopes to make up for the loss of a reliable player

MANILA, Philippines – Former NBA MVP Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves are in “advanced discussions on a contract settlement that is expected to end his second stint with the team,” ESPN reported on Wednesday, September 21 (Thursday, September 22 in Manila).

The report said the 40-year-old Garnett appears keen on retiring from the NBA. The former All-Star has one season worth $8 million left on his contract.

The departure of the 21-year veteran known as “The Big Ticket” would mean the loss of one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Taken fifth overall by Minnesota in the 1995 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-11 forward led the franchise to multiple playoff appearances while making consecutive NBA All-Star teams and winning the league MVP award in 2004.

Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics in July 2007, teaming up with other All-Stars Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Together, the trio led the franchise to its 17th title in the 2008 season, and then made the NBA Finals again two years later.

Along with Pierce, Garnett was then traded to the Brooklyn Nets in June 2013 and led the franchise to a second-round appearance in the 2014 NBA Playoffs. In February 2015, Garnett waived his no-trade clause for a reunion with the Timberwolves via trade.

Due to knee issues, Garnett only appeared in 38 games for Minnesota last NBA season and averaged 3.2 points and 3.9 rebounds a contest. The tested veteran played more of a leadership role to the team’s young cornerstones, particularly first overall pick and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Karl Anthony-Towns.

For his career, Garnett has averaged 17.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.3 steals a game.

Hamstring injury to cost Middleton 6 months

Milwaukee guard Khris Middleton is expected to have surgery to repair a left hamstring injury he suffered during preseason workouts, Bucks GM John Hammond announced on Wednesday. The surgery is planned for next week and will keep Middleton out of action for 6 months.

“We’re obviously disappointed for Khris and our team, but injuries are an unfortunate part of the game,” Hammond said.

“We’ll rely on our overall roster depth to help us while Khris is out for a significant period of the season.”

The 25-year-old Middleton averaged a career-high 18.2 points to go with 4.2 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.7 steals last NBA season. His injury is a big blow for a Milwaukee team in the hunt for a return to the playoffs after a disappointing 33-49 season in 2015-2016. – Rappler.com
