MANILA, Philippines – The San Mig Super Coffee Mixers are breathing a sigh of relief tonight as their team doctor assures center Marc Pingris will be ready to go for Game 5 of the Philippine Cup Finals on Sunday night.

“In 24 hours he’ll be okay. He’ll feel better tomorrow,” Dr. Raffy Sanchez told the media after Friday’s Game 4. “He can practice tomorrow if he feels okay. Nothing serious, really.”

Pingris, 32, went down at the 5-minute mark of the third holding on to his right eye.

As seen on the replay, Rain or Shine bigman JR Quiñahan inadvertently hit Pingris smack on the face in a rebound play. It took a Paul Lee triple on the other end before play was stopped and doctors checked on Pingris. He appeared to be in much pain and never returned to the game.

Sanchez clarified the injury Pingris sustained was an abrasion on his right cornea. “He was just given anesthetic and antibiotic drop to the eyes,” said Sanchez.

He also explained that the abrasion was simply “too annoying” and “too painful” for Pingris to play through it, as it seemingly affected his ability to open the eye.

As far as his chances for Sunday’s game, Sanchez assures the 6-foot-5 veteran will be able to play.

“Big chance,” Sanchez said. “He’ll be able to play by Sunday.”

“If he’s still not okay by tomorrow, we’re planning to put a lens, a contact lens just to expedite the healing process.”

The Mixers built a daunting 3-1 series lead over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Friday, February 21 with a 93-90 victory to move one win away from the Philippine Cup title.

Before he was injured, Pingris played for 27 minutes and scored 6 points, grabbed 6 boards, and dished out 3 assists. In his stead, rookie slotman Ian Sangalang stepped up with 17 points. – Rappler.com
