Iverson to face college stars, PBA legends in November
The former NBA MVP will come to the Philippines as a coach of the Ball Up team and will hold crossover clinics

MANILA, Philippines – UAAP and NCAA basketball standouts in the Philippines and former PBA stars will go head to head against Coach Allen Iverson’s team for the ‘All In’ event  scheduled on November 5, Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

A project co-organized by Gawad Kalinga and PCWorX IT Solutions and made possible by agent Sheryl Reyes, ‘All In’ will feature Iverson in his new job – coaching.

Iverson will guide his team composed of Ball Up (formerly known as And1) basketball players and former NBA players Eddy Curry and Steve Francis against some of the Philippines’ best, past and present.

Reyes, Iverson’s sports agent in Asia, mentioned that part of having Iverson over as a coach is to prepare him for a coaching job the Philadelphia 76ers are currently grooming him for.

“Iverson will be coaching,” said Reyes during the press conference for ‘All In’ on Friday afternoon, August 1, at the NBA Café in SM Aura mall. She also added that the former NBA MVP will be “giving tips on his crossover when he gets here.”

“AI is on his way to show the Philippines some love,” added former NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury, who was recently in the Philippines for a number of fundraising projects and sent a message during the press conference via video.

Iverson himself was also supposed to talk to the media at NBA Café via telephone, but had to bow out due to a fever.

Instead, his talent manager Gary Moore shared some words.

“We are very excited and looking forward to come to the Philippines,” he mentioned. “We just hope all the media supports Sheryl (Reyes) and all the people that’s involved. We look forward to coming.”

Reyes noted that the final selection of players to face Iverson and company is “still a surprise,” but a list of players being considered was shown to those in attendance on Friday afternoon.

From the UAAP, there are: Jeron Teng (DLSU), Arnold Van Opstal (DLSU), Kiefer Ravena (ADMU), Arvin Tolentino (ADMU), Mike Tolomia (FEU), Gelo Alonino (NU), Charles Mammie (UE), Roi Sumang (UE).

From the NCAA, there are: Jiovani Jalalon (Arellano), Dioncee Holts (Arellano), Ola Adeogun (SBC), Andrei Paras (SBC), Javee Mocon (SBC), Bradwyn Guinto (SSC-R).

Meanwhile, Allan Caidic, Ren-Ren Ritualo, Benjie Paras, and Marlou Aquiño are some of the PBA legends that could be part of the festivity.

Three players from each group will be in the final selection.

Iverson is also scheduled to have a lot of other activities besides the game, including visiting a couple of Gawad Kalinga sites.

Proceeds of ‘All In’ will go to Gawad Kalinga.

Ticket prices for the charity game are going to be available for purchase through TicketNet outlets, ranging from as low as Php 600 (General Admission) to Php 6,500 (VIP).

According to PCWorX IT Solutions President Jake Oh, ‘All In’ is dedicated to getting help to people in need.

“Our goal is to help people,” Oh said. “Help change their lives for the better.”

“Today, it’s not about money,” added Michael Chua, also of PCWorX. “It’s not about profit. Today, it’s about service.”

Gawad Kalinga Quezon City head Justin Cruz also chimed in, saying that: “Our goal is for the Philippines to be a first would country one day.”  Rappler.com
