MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American basketball player Jordan Clarkson of the Los Angeles Lakers had his number 22 jersey retired at his alma mater Wagner High School on Friday, February 13.

Oklahoma City shooting guard Andre Roberson also retired his Wagner jersey together with Clarkson before a District 25-6A game between Wagner and visitors Clemens.

Clarkson, 22, whose mother Annette is Filipino, helped Wagner reach the state semifinals in 2009 and 2010 together with Roberson. They were presented with framed jerseys and banners that hung from the rafters.

The 6-foot-5 point guard Clarkson is slowly but surely making a name for himself in the NBA as he has started in the last 10 games for the Lakers, overtaking Jeremy Lin.

Head coach Byron Scott has expressed confidence in the rookie’s game, who posted 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in a 102-86 loss to Portland last Wednesday, February 11.

“He’s shown he can definitely play,” Scott said in an interview with LA Times’ Broderick Turner. “I’m not going to go so far to say he can be a starting point guard. But I think he can definitely play and be in the rotation. How much he develops this summer remains to be seen.”

In the last 10 games Clarkson, who has been training with veteran playmaker Steve Nash, averaged 30.6 minutes and had 13.4 points on top of 3.8 assists and 3 rebounds a game.

He dished out a career-high 7 assists versus Denver last Tuesday in a 106-96 defeat.

“He’s like most rookies that have their ups and downs,” Scott added. “They have their good days and bad days. The one thing I love about him is when he falls on his face a little bit, he gets right back up and ready for the next game. That’s the competitive nature I want all of our point guards to have.”

Los Angeles secured Clarkson’s draft rights from the Washington Wizards, which drafted him in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, in exchange for cash considerations. – Rappler.com
