MANILA, Philippines –  Former San Sebastian College stars Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva reunite as they banner Manila North to lead one of four local squads seeing action in the 2014 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3×3 World Tour Manila opening on Saturday, July 19, at the SM MegaMall.

Alaska’s Abueva, known as “The Beast” for his do-it-all ways, and Sangalang of newly-crowned PBA Governors’ Cup champion San Mig Coffee will be joined by Aces forward Vic Manuel and NLEX’s Jake Pascual as they battle China’s Xinzhuang and Auckland of New Zealand in succession at the start of the two-day competition. 

The Manila North cagers take on the Chinese at 4:30 p.m. then tackle the Kiwis at 6:20 p.m. in the event organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas headed by president Manny V. Pangilinan and serving as the Manila eliminations of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Finals set for Oct. 11-12 in Tokyo, Japan.

“I am happy to have the Philippines host this 3×3 international event of FIBA, knowing how Filipinos enjoy the game of basketball,” said SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan in a statement.

“Three on three basketball is tailor-fit for us Filipinos as it relies more on quickness, creativity and shooting than height – that is why the game, known as ‘tatluhan’ here,” Pangilinan noted. 

The champion and runner-up in the event will compete in the Tokyo finale together with the two topnotchers from the Beijing Masters (Aug. 2-3), Chicago Masters (Aug. 15-16), Prague Masters (Aug. 23-24), Lausanne Masters (Aug. 29-30) and Rio de Janeiro Masters (Sept. 27-28).

Manila West is the other team featuring PBA players made up of Globalport’s Terrence Romeo, Meralco’s Rey Guevarra, Talk ‘N Text’s KC Canaleta and Air 21’s Aldrech Ramos. The squad will tackle Kobe of Japan at 4:10 p.m. and defending champion Doha of Qatar at 5:40 p.m.

Manila East, composed of Ousseynou Karbala Gueye, Darryl Henderson Jr., John Adrian Wong and Jerie Marlon Pingoy, will battle Surabaya at 4:50 p.m and Yogjakarta at 6:40 p.m.

The last local squad, Manila South, with Joshua Irvin Ayo, Adonis Christian Nismal, Karl Kenneth Estrada and Raphael Jude De Vera of the national champion Naga City Titans, will meet Medan at 3:40 p.m. and Jakarta at 5:20 p.m, respectively.

Fresh from reigning supreme at the FIBA 3×3 World Championships in Moscow, Russia, the Qataris showcase the towering Mohammed Saleem Abdulla and Yaseen Musa, who both saw action in last year’s FIBA Asia Cup, while the Japanese are spearheaded by Kenji Hilke and Jimi Hayakawa.

The top two squads in their respective pools will advance to the knockout quarterfinals, with the winners battling in the crossover semifinals.

The semifinal winners will dispute the championship with the champion receiving $10,000 (approximately P430,000) and the runner-up, $5,000 (P215,000).
