'Ako si Jayson Castro William, taga Guagua, Pampanga, lumaban para sa bayan,' Castro posts on Instagram

MANILA, Philippines – Jayson Castro announced his retirement from international play Thursday, July 7, a day after Gilas Pilipinas bowed out of contention in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

In a post on his Instagram account, the 30-year-old star point guard said it is time for him to “hand over the responsibility to the younger generation.”

His full post read: “The end of our bid for a spot at the Rio Olympics will also be the end of my stint as a member of Gilas Pilipinas. For the past few years, it has been my honor to represent all of you but now it’s time to hand over the responsibility to the younger generation.

Maraming salamat sa walang sawang pagsuporta niyo sa Gilas. Hindi ko makakalimutan lahat ng pinagsamahan natin. Ako si Jayson Castro William, taga Guagua, Pampanga, lumaban para sa bayan. #7 #PUSO”

(Thank you very much for your unwavering support for Gilas. I will never forget what we’ve shared. I am Jayson Castro William, from Guagua, Pampanga, and I fought for our country.)

Castro, who plays for Tropang TNT in the PBA, initially hinted he would be retiring immediately after the loss to New Zealand late Wednesday night, July 6, saying: “Siguro this is my last na (Perhaps this is already my last).”

Castro has been one of the anchors of Gilas in the previous years, leading them to back-to-back FIBA Asia Championship silver medal finishes and a stint in the FIBA World Cup in 2014.

The 6-time PBA champion was also named to FIBA Asia’s Mythical Team twice in 2013 and 2015.

Castro’s TNT teammate Ranidel De Ocampo, also a Gilas mainstay, likewise confirmed he will no longer play for the national team. – Rappler.com
