Tab Baldwin is new Gilas coach
It's official: Tab Baldwin, who's been serving as consultant for Gilas since 2013, will now be the team's head coach

MANILA, Philippines — Tab Baldwin has signed on as the new head coach of the men’s national basketball team for the next 4 years, according to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Sonny Barrios.

Barrios confirmed to Rappler on Monday, December 22 that Baldwin, 56, has signed to a 4-year deal for the job. Reports said his contract starts this January 2015.

Barrios was unsure when exactly the contract was signed but said it was only “very recent.”

Baldwin was selected over former national coach Jong Uichico after a a search committee formed by the Philippine basketball federation conducted a screening process last November. Baldwin will officially be introduced as head coach on Tuesday, December 23 in a press conference before Game 3 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals between Talk ‘N Text and San Miguel at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Baldwin will be taking over from Chot Reyes, who was relieved of the coaching duties last October following a dismal Asian Games stint and a surprise performance at the FIBA World Cup.

Baldwin will not be starting from scratch with the nationals as he was with the team as consultant since 2013. The American-New Zealander helped Gilas Pilipinas achieve a silver medal finish in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship and qualify for the World Cup. He was consultant up until the Asian Games.

Baldwin has extensive coaching experience internationally having coached the national teams of Jordan, New Zealand, and Lebanon. He is also a many-time champion coach in the New Zealand National Basketball League. – Rappler.com
