Guevarra outlasts his Meralco teammate Chris Newsome to retain the Slam Dunk crown

MANILA, Philippines – The Meralco Bolts’ Rey Guevarra won the Slam Dunk Competition at the PBA All-Star Weekend for a third straight year after outlasting teammate Chris Newsome in the finals on Friday, August 5, at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Guevarra had scores of 50 and 47 in the finals from the judges for a total of 97, which barely scraped by the 96 points of Newsome who received a 46 in his first dunk and then got a 50 in the second.

For his first slam in the finals, Newsome juggled 3 basketballs and finished with a tomahawk, and then followed that up with a 360-degree jam from the baseline off a Scottie Thompson pass.

Guevarra, on the other hand, went with a between-the-legs jam under the basket and for his finale, threw down a dunk after jumping over Jericho Cruz and Raymond Almazan.

Guevarra joined KG Caneleta as the only players to win the event 3 straight years.
