MVP expects Guiao-led NLEX to follow Meralco’s footsteps

MANILA, Philippines – It took 6 years, but the Meralco Bolts finally reached its first PBA Finals appearance in the 2016 Governors’ Cup conference.

The NLEX Road Warriors, which joined the PBA in the 2014-2015 season, has yet to achieve a similar feat. Although that same finals expectation is now present with the arrival of new head coach Yeng Guiao, according to team patron Manny V. Pangilinan.

“Yeah, I’m happy for NLEX. I think it’s a perfect fit between him (Guiao) and NLEX,” Pangilinan told reporters following the Bolts Game 1 win in the finals against Barangay Ginebra.

News of Guiao, a 7-time PBA champion, moving from the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to the Road Warriors was reported on Wednesday, October 5. On Friday, the team made it official with a statement released by team governor Mon Fernandez.

“With his championship experience and passion for the sport, we are certain that Coach Yeng will take our team to the next level. We look forward to a very fruitful and dynamic partnership, not only in the field of basketball, but also in the socio civic programs of our company,” Fernandez said.

Part of the deal means the 57-year-old Guiao will be in a situation where he can help other people, specifically the CSR (corporate social responsibility) function.

“There’s a strong identification of the toll raise in Pampanga, so I think that’s part of the reason why he took the [job] of joining NLEX. We welcome him, and we’re happy he’s with us,” Pangilinan said.

When asked about the progress he expects to see with the Road Warriors as they enter a new era, the man known as MVP was forthcoming.

“Well, I expect them to be following Meralco’s footsteps, I guess.” – Rappler.com
