Alapag surpasses Caidic, sets new PBA all-time record for 3-pointers
Jimmy Alapag sets the new all-time record for most 3-pointers made at 1,243

MANILA, Philippines – Once again, Jimmy Alapag proves he is mightier than his height and, at 38 years old, his age.

Alapag, one of the PBA’s 40 Greatest Players, locked in another achievement in his incessantly fruitful 13-year career as the new all-time record holder for most 3-pointers in league history.

The Meralco Bolts veteran playmaker officially surpassed the previous 1,242 number held by Allan “The Triggerman” Caidic when he buried his 1,243rd career 3-pointer in the second quarter during Game 2 of the 2016 Governors’ Cup Finals on Sunday, October 9.

Alapag buried the trey midway in the second frame, giving the Bolts a 39-34 lead.

Alapag, the former TNT star, tied Caidic’s record in Game 1 against Barangay Ginebra, on Friday, October 7 when he sank one of his classic cold-blooded triples nearing the end of the fourth quarter, shoving Meralco ahead 101-100.

The Bolts went on to take Game 1, 114-109, in overtime.

Alapag, known as “The Mighty Mouse,” retired in January 2015 but returned before this season to Meralco via a trade. He has since provided the Bolts invaluable wisdom and leadership on their rise to a historic first-ever finals stint.

The 6-time PBA champion and a 2011 season MVP Alapag looks to help Meralco hold up another trophy this conference when this best-of-7 series is over.

Renowned for his humility on and off the court, Alapag was never one to chase individual records and has always deflected credit to his teammates.

Before the finals, Alapag diverted attention from his record chase to Caidic, now 53 and one of the PBA’s Greatest Players as well.

“For the record, he (Caidic) will always be the greatest shooter our country’s ever seen,” said Alapag, a 6-time PBA champion and 2011 season MVP.

“Record or no record, you don’t do the things that he’s done. I’m just honored and I’m really humbled to be included in that same class.”

During his playing years, Caidic set plenty of all-time records. In a historic game between Presto and Ginebra on November 21, 1991, Caidic dropped 79 points for the record most points in a game by a homegrown Filipino player.

He also had the most points in a half with 53 and the most in one quarter with 37. But the highlight of that game was his record 17-of-27 triples. He had 8 treys in one quarter and sank 8 straight at one point as well – all while his wife reportedly was simultaneously in labor at the hospital and he missed most of the first quarter. – Rappler.com
