MANILA, Philippines – Jayson Castro and Terrence Romeo will lead the honorees for the 2016 PBA Press Corps Annual Awards Night, slated for Saturday, October 22 at the Gloria Maris restaurant in Cubao.

In a press release, the PBA Press Corps announced that Castro will be honored with the Accel Order of Merit Award, while Romeo is going to be crowned as the league’s Scoring Champion for the second straight season.

The Order of Merit is given to the player who earned the most number of Player of the Week citations conferred by the men and women who cover the PBA.

The TNT KaTropa veteran playmaker was named Player of the Week 6 times this season. The 30-year-old Castro had a strong finish to the year when he copped the Best Player of the Conference plum in the Governors’ Cup. He also came in second in the season MVP race.

Globalport guard Romeo, on the other hand, will receive the scoring title after he averaged 24.89 points in 37 games this season to emerge as the league’s top scorer once again.

The 24-year-old young star shot 35.9% from 3-point range and 42.9% from the field overall. Romeo normed 19.6 points when he won the scoring title last season.

Meanwhile, newly-minted Rookie of the Year Chris Newsome of the Meralco Bolts will get a share of the limelight as he leads the Accel All-Rookie team.

Joining Newsome are TNT’s Troy Rosario, Blackwater’s Art Dela Cruz, Rain or Shine’s Maverick Ahanmisi, and Barangay Ginebra’s Scottie Thompson.

The highlight of the Awards Night is the bestowing of the Baby Dalupan Coach of the Year award, named in honor of the late great champion mentor.

Dalupan, who passed away in August, would have been 93 on Wednesday. There will be a special tribute to honor his legacy and his immense contributions as one of the greatest coaches in Philippine basketball.

Other awards to be handed out are the Executive of the Year, Mighty Sports Defensive Player, the Bogs Adornado Comeback Player of the Year, Mr. Quality Minutes, and the revived All-Interview team. – Rappler.com
