Metta World Peace to visit Manila in 2015
Former NBA champion and All-Star Metta World Peace will be visiting the Philippines in 2015, and may even stick around to play in the PBA as an import

MANILA, Philippines – Former NBA champion and All-Star Metta World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest) plans on coming to Manila in 2015 for a charity event, basketball agent Sheryl Reyes told Rappler on Friday, December 12.

World Peace hopes come to Manila sometime between February and March to take part in a charity event for one of the top hotels in the country, said Reyes, who’s been in discussion with Heidi Buech, the president of Artest Management Group.

“Heidi and I have been discussing to bring Metta out here to play for a charity event sometime between February and March,” Reyes said to Rappler. “The charity event is for a top hotel in Manila.”

Details of the charity event will become more clear once Artest’s season with the Sichuan Blue Whales in the Chinese Basketball Association comes to an end in early February.

“The Blue Whales will not be making the playoffs, so we are looking at him being able to leave sometime between February 2-8 and he would fly straight to Manila from Chengdu,” Reyes said.

World Peace, who won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010, caused quite a stir on Thursday, December 11, when he tweeted that he plans on playing professional basketball in the Philippines, possibly referring to the Philippine Basketball Association.

Reyes told Rappler that two PBA teams are negotiating to have World Peace as their import for the upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup, but opted not to specify which. She did, however, give a clue, saying the two interested squads are currently playing in the ongoing Philippine Cup conference playoffs.

She also confirmed: “It isn’t KIA.”

Bringing in World Peace does come with a risk. The Commissioner’s Cup is scheduled to begin on January 29, during which he still has responsibilities with the Blue Whales in the CBA.

“The Blue Whales won’t be done until February, so the plan is if one of those two top teams interested need him to come as a replacement, then we can consider.”
