MANILA, Philippines – Terrence Romeo scored 25 points while import Calvin Warner posted 17 points and a season-high 30 rebounds as the Globalport Batang Pier dismantled the Blackwater Elite, 101-78, to win their second straight game in the 2015 PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday, February 22 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Batang Pier, which also had Ronjay Buenafe burying 3-of-5 triples for 15 points and 7 rebounds off the bench, were clicking on all cylinders in this game as they hiked their record to 4-3.

“Yun yung challenge ko sa kanila eh, hindi pwedeng okay-okay lang,” said interim coach Eric Gonzales. “Hindi pwedeng average [performance] lang. Hindi dahil Blackwater yan. Walang mahinang team sa PBA.”

(That was my challenge for them, that they should not play okay. They can’t just have an average performance. Not because it’s only Blackwater. There is no weak team in the PBA.)

Globalport indeed went all out and played spirited all throughout to dominate every major department.

The Batang Pier, which is known more for its wingmen in Romeo and rookie Stanely Pringle, crashed the boards with reckless abandon this time around for a franchise-best and season-high 74 rebounds compared to just 45 from the Elite.

Their tremendous rebounding led to a 52-32 advantage in points in the paint as well as a 23-9 edge in second chance points.

With its speedy guards, Globalport also owned fastbreak points, 19-9, as they began creating separation late in the second period for a 50-37 halftime spread.

Globalport never lifted its foot from the gas pedal, never scoring below 24 points in each of the last two quarters to lead by as much as 90-63 and run away with the win.

Blackwater, which fell to 1-5 and two straight losses after claiming the franchise’s first PBA win versus San Miguel Beer, had Marcus Douthit leading the way with 19 points, 17 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 blocks.

Sprightly guard Brian Heruela notched 17 points on 7-of-14 field goals to go with 7 assists.

Globalport is set for a much tougher assignment on Sunday, March 1 against the streaking Talk ’N Text, while Blackwater attempts to pull off another upset against Barangay Ginebra on Wednesday, February 25.

Gonzales, who admits has already been preparing for Talk ’N Text, says he expects nothing less than a similar effort and urgency from his players come March 1.

“Ganoon rin katulad ng sinabi ko sa kanila, whether it be Talk ’N Text or Blackwater, yung puso natin iche-check natin na go hard tayo and wala tayong dead time.”

(I told them that whether it be Talk ’N Text or Blackwater, we should always check our heart and make sure we go hard and we won’t have dead time.) – Rappler.com
