Ex-Laker Derrick Caracter to replace GlobalPort import Warner
Caracter, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010, will replace Calvin Warner, who is leaving to attend to personal issues

MANILA, Philippines – The GlobalPort Batang Pier are set to change imports for the 2015 PBA Commissioner’s Cup once again, bringing in former Los Angeles Lakers big man Derrick Caracter to take the spot of Calvin Warner.

The development was confirmed to Rappler on Monday, March 9, by the agent of both Caracter and Warner, Sheryl Reyes, who said that Warner had to leave the Batang Pier due to personal reasons.

Caracter just recently arrived in Manila.

“I am bringing in Derrick Caracter, former Los Angeles Laker, to come for GlobalPort,” Reyes said, “for the reason that Calvin Warner needs to attend to personal and family matters.”

Reyes says that Warner is going home, but will return to the Philippines to play for GlobalPort in the 2015 PBA Governors’ Cup.

This will mark the second time that the Batang Pier will switch imports this conference. Warner, who averaged 20.8 points and 23.3 rebounds in four games, was brought in a few weeks back by the franchise to replace CJ Leslie.

The 26-year-old Caracter will have big shoes to fill for the departing Warner, who helped GlobalPort go 2-2 during his stay with the club.

The Batang Pier are currently 4-4 this conference, which is good for seventh place in the league standings. Remaining on their schedule includes games against the NLEX Road Warriors (3-4), Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (4-3), and San Miguel Beermen (2-6).

Only eight teams will make the Commissioner’s Cup playoffs. The KIA Carnival (4-5) and NLEX aren’t far behind from GlobalPort in the race for a postseason berth.

Caracter, who hails from Fanwood, New Jersey, was drafted 58th overall by the Lakers in the 2010 NBA Draft following a four-year college career spent between Louisville and University of Texas at El Paso.

In his lone NBA campaign, Caracter averaged 2 points and 1 rebound in 41 games for the Lakers during the 2010-2011 season.

Following his time with Los Angeles, Caracter played for the Bakersfield Jam, Los Angeles D-Fenders, Rio Grande Valley Vipers, and Idaho Stampede in the NBA D-League. He’s also played professional basketball in Puerto Rico, Israel, Lithuania, Brazil, and most recently, Uruguay.
