“I don’t know why he’s still a referee in this league," the Rain or Shine coach said after he was hit with a technical foul for allegedly using profanity

MANILA, Philippines – Despite watching his team go berserk from 3-point range to take down the Meralco Bolts, 92-82, for a 2-0 semifinals lead on Sunday, April 5, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao was not a happy man.

During the post-game press conference, Guiao slammed PBA referee Rey Yante, whom he called a “bare-faced liar” and accused him of “inventing calls.”

Yante was one of the three officials calling game two between the Bolts and Elasto Painters, but was the one who called a crucial technical foul on Guiao with 2:29 to go in the contest for using profane language.

Guiao, who was also given a technical foul by Yante for using profane language in an elimination round matchup against Barangay Ginebra a few weeks ago, refuted the official’s decision.

“[That’s] twice now referee Yante has said that I had used profane language, and I deny that because I don’t know where he got that,” said Guiao, who’s complained about PBA officiating a number of times over the past few weeks. “He’s a bare-faced liar.”

“He’s a liar. I will say it straight to his face that he’s a liar,” Guiao added later while talking to members of the media in Tagalog. “He didn’t hear me curse and he will call a technical foul on me for using profane language that he didn’t even hear.”

Guiao says Yante’s officiating does not overshadow his team’s impressive performance, but he says the Elasto Painters are fortunate that they weren’t stuck in a closer game down the stretch, otherwise the technical foul could have had larger implications.

“If you have a good cushion, it may not alter the result of the game. But again, if it is a close game, it will. We’re lucky that we’ve won by double-digit margins in the last two games,” Guiao said.

Guiao indicated that Rain or Shine will file a complaint to the PBA on Monday, April 6, along with a request.

“He didn’t see or hear me, and that can be born out,” argued the head coach in Tagalog. “You cannot invent calls, and he was just inventing calls. So we are going to request the PBA not to assign him anymore in our games.”

There’s no guarantee that the PBA will acquiesce to Rain or Shine’s request, and Guiao says that decision is “up to them,” but he feels Yante “has to be answerable” for his calls.

“They can deny our request, but it’s up to them,” he said, “ but for a referee to invent calls, that’s dangerous, and that’s just lying. That’s just basic dishonesty on his part.”

“I don’t know what kind of judgment he has… I don’t know if he has anything personal or he’s really incompetent? I don’t know,” Guiao said later on..

“I don’t know why he’s still a referee in this league.”
