Chris Tiu on PBA future: ‘I trust in God’s plan’
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters guard Chris Tiu says he is unsure about his future plans with regards to professional basketball, but is leaving what lies ahead to “God’s plan.”

MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters guard Chris Tiu says he is unsure about his future plans with regards to professional basketball, but is leaving what lies ahead to “God’s plan.”

In a text message sent to Rappler on Thursday, July 9, Tiu said that he “initially intended to play in the PBA for just one contract period, but now I’m reconsidering because I never thought I would enjoy playing basketball this much in this level.”

Reports surfaced on the net early on Thursday that Tiu planned on retiring after playing 3 years with the Rain or Shine Elasto painters.

Team board governor Atty. Mamerto Mondragon told PhilStar: “He (Tiu) already said last year this will be his last year because he wants to help his father and their businesses.”

His brother – basketball analyst Charles – also told GMA online that chances of his brother either retiring or continuing to play was at “50/50.”

A source close to Rain or Shine furthermore told Rappler that Tiu informed his teammates before the 2014-2015 PBA season that it would be his last, but Tiu did not confirm with his team if he was pushing through with plans of retirement after the Elasto Painters saw their PBA season come to an end in a loss to the San Miguel Beermen on Wednesday, July 8.

“If you’re asking about my PBA status, first of all, you have to ask [Rain or Shine management] if they are still interested to renew my contract. I cannot just assume that they will keep me. We have not spoken yet,” said Tiu, who has averaged 5 points and 1.9 assists a game in his career.

Tiu tells PhilStar that the game he loves is also draining, which led him to consider the decision.

“As much as playing pro basketball is enjoyable, it is also taxing physically, mentally and emotionally, which may compromise my quality of work with my other commitments,” Tiu said.

Tiu noted that being with an organization like Rain or Shine has played a major role in his reconsidering to stay longer in the PBA.

“My teammates are just fun to be with and they are amazing players,” said Tiu, who added, “Owners and management are very easy to deal with and they are like family. No nonsense politics.”

“I like Coach Yeng’s [Guiao] style of running a team and his basketball philosophy. I’ve been learning a lot and it’s only recently that I’ve really been able to adjust and get my confidence and rhythm going somewhat.”

Tiu adds: “The [Rain or Shine] fans are amazing.”

The former Ateneo Blue Eagle, who won a championship with the university in the 2008 UAAP men’s basketball season, said that he is leaving what lies in the future to the lord.

“At the end of the day, I am truly grateful to the Lord, the team, the fans and the support of my family. I trust in God’s plan and I pray that I will do what He wants of me.”
