WATCH: Unknown Pinoy Abcede KOs number 1 contender in Thailand
The Philippines' winning streak abroad continues as 20-year-old Valencia City native Jaysever Abcede scores a one-punch knockout of Pigmy Kokietgym

MANILA, Philippines – Prior to Friday, Jaysever Abcede had never fought outside of the Philippine region of Mindanao, amassing an unremarkable record against opponents with as many as 44 losses.

It’s easy to see why the handlers of perennial contender Pigmy Kokietgym thought his no. 1 strawweight ranking with the World Boxing Organization (WBO) was safe against the 20-year-old from Valencia City, Bukidnon when they fought in Bangkok, Thailand on Friday, August 28.

The 33-year-old Kokietgym (57-8-2, 23 knockouts) had challenged for world titles on two previous occasions and was in line to face Japanese prodigy Kosei Tanaka for the WBO crown. That was until he ran into Abcede – and his right hook.

Midway through the eleventh round, Abcede (10-3, 6 KOs) used his left cross to set-up a pull counter, walking the appropriately named Pigmy into a punch he never saw coming. Kokietgym attempted to rise but fell to the side once more, prompting the stoppage at the 2:10 mark.

With the win, Abcede earns the vacant WBO Oriental minimumweight title and will likely enter the WBO world rankings next month.

Abcede did not respond to a request for comment.

Jestoni Autida’s knockout of Ratchasak KKP

This isn’t the first time Kokietgym had been knocked out by a Filipino boxer – former world champions Rodel Mayol and Joma Gamboa both stopped him in 5 rounds back in 2001.

Abcede’s win tops off a month of upsets by Filipino boxers abroad. Two weeks prior on August 14, Jestoni Autida (9-3, 4 KOs) of Zamboanga City knocked out Ratchasak KKP (29-4-1, 14 KOs) in Hat Yai, Thailand. Also on Friday, Rene Dacquel (15-5-1, 5 KOs) dropped Thembelani Nxoshe (13-6-1, 3 KOs) twice in South Africa to win a split-decision and the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) International junior bantamweight title. – Rappler.com
