Top Pinoy talent takes the ring in free boxing shows this weekend
Randy Petalcorin and Eden Sonsona return to action in Gensan on Sunday while Jack Tepora headlines in Mandaue City on Friday

MANILA, Philippines – While looking for your holiday gifts this weekend at the mall, you might just spot the next stars in Philippine boxing also.

Former WBA interim junior flyweight titleholder Randy Petalcorin and Eden Sonsona, two talented yet relatively unknown Filipino boxers, will co-headline a boxing event at Robinson’s Mall Atrium in General Santos City on Sunday, December 4. The show will be promoted by Sanman Promotions beginning at 3 pm.

Two nights earlier, on Friday, December 2, world-ranked junior featherweight prospect Jack Tepora will headline a fight card at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex in Mandaue City against Galih Susanto for the vacant WBO Oriental super bantamweight title. That show, promoted by Omega Pro Sports International, will feature a total of 10 fights, with a live band playing at 6 pm followed by fights at 7. That show also will be free to the public.

Petalcorin (24-2-1, 18 knockouts), ranked as the number two 108-pound fighter in the world by The Ring magazine, will fight Arnold Garde (7-3-2, 3 KOs) in the 12-round main event. Petalcorin, a native of Davao City, is looking for his second straight win following a highly-controversial loss to Omari Kimweri in Australia earlier this year, when the referee missed 4 knockdown calls that would’ve swung the decision to Petalcorin.

He’ll face Garde, also of Davao City, who is two years older at 26 and coming off of 4 straight wins.

The card will also feature Sonsona (34-6-2, 12 KOs) in his first fight since May of 2015, when he knocked out previously-unbeaten Mexican Adrian Estrella in a significant upset. Sonsona’s opponent for the 8-round junior lightweight fight will be Jaime Barcelona (39-60-1, 10 KOs). The fight will be Sonsona’s first in his hometown in his 12-year career, and his first since signing with Sanman.

On the Cebu card, Tepora (18-0, 13 KOs) will face Indonesia’s Susanto (12-6-1, 2 KOs) in just his second 12-round scheduled fight. Tepora, a former two-time National Games gold medalist as an amateur, is rated number 14 in the world by the WBO.

On the undercard, Kenny Demecillo (11-3-2, 7 KOs) will face Jestoni Autida (9-5, 4 KOs) in a 10-round fight for the World Boxing Federation Asia Pacific bantamweight title, and Christian Araneta (12-0, 10 KOs) will meet Philip Luis Cuerdo (9-2-1, 4 KOs) in a 10-round junior flyweight match. – Rappler.com
