WATCH: Actor Mickey Rourke scores KO in boxing return

Usually when a 62-year-old actor talks about making a comeback, it’s for a daytime drama show on CBS or a role in a Nick at Nite original. For actor Mickey Rourke, comeback means a return to the boxing ring.

The American actor, who won a Golden Globe for his lead role in The Wrestler and appeared as the main villian Whiplash in Iron Man 2, fought for the first time in 20 years, knocking down hand-picked opponent Elliot Seymour twice en route to a second round knockout on Saturday, November 29 in Moscow, Russia.

Rourke’s hair had grayed significantly since the last time he entered a ring in 1994 but sported a well-conditioned, tattooed physique after checking in slightly above the light heavyweight limit at 179.2 pounds.

Seymour, who is 33 years Rourke’s junior at 29, had lost 9 of his ten previous bouts. Rourke, who turned professional in 1991 with a then unknown trainer named Freddie Roach, who himself went on to become quite famous due to a fighter named Manny Pacquiao, entered with a record of 6 wins – 4 by knockout – with no defeats and two draws.

Rourke had needed facial reconstructive surgery after his last bout, but wouldn’t need any after this performance. Seymour threw flicking jabs without testing Rourke’s chin with a right hand in round one. Rourke switched stances frequently before dropping Seymour for the count.

 Afterwards, Rourke lifted his trainer, Iloilo City, Philippines native Marvin Somodio atop his shoulders for a victory lap around the ring.

Rourke says he hopes to do four more fights in Russia before hanging up the gloves for good. – Rappler.com
