Manny Pacquiao to have surgery on shoulder
Doctors have deemed Manny Pacquiao's shoulder injury serious enough to require surgery

LOS ANGELES, USA – Manny Pacquiao will undergo surgery on his right shoulder this week, Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz told Rappler.

The Filipino boxing champion, who suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right arm during a sparring session for his May 2 fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr, had an MRI done on Monday afternoon in Los Angeles, confirming the need for the surgery.

“The injury sustained to his shoulder during training camp worsened during the fight, so we had a subsequent MRI today which confirmed that it’s exasperated,” Koncz tells Rappler. “After consulting with a team of doctors, Manny and [Pacquiao’s wife] Jinkee decided that it’s in the best interest of Manny’s long-term health to have surgery done, which will be done at an undisclosed location.”

Koncz said the time and the location of the surgery is being withheld from the public so the media and public do not disrupt the hospital’s normal operations.

Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 knockouts) said he aggravated his shoulder injury during the fourth round of his unanimous decision loss to Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao was scheduled to return to the Philippines on Wednesday but will delay his departure for the operation.

Koncz says that the doctors have told him that Pacquiao will be sidelined 4 to 6 months, but will have more to say after the surgery is completed.

“After the surgery the doctors will do an official statement where they will thoroughly explain what the injury is, what the surgical procedure was and the prognosis and how long they’re expecting the recovery period will be.” – Rappler.com
