MANILA, Philippines — In the aftermath of days of heavy rains that have killed 19, organizers of the Clear Dream Match have decided to use the match on Saturday, August 24, to help efforts to send relief to millions of Filipinos affected by the disaster.

Featuring star Philippine Azkals Phil and James Younghusband and global football icons Fabio Cannavaro and Dennis Wise, the Clear Dream Match will be giving half of its ticket sales to the victims of the flooding.

“We decided to make it a totally non-profit event,” said Clear brand manager Drew Copuyoc, who added that the other half will go to its beneficiary: the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation.

Big names in town

Cannavaro, a 2006 FIFA World Cup champion, and Chelsea legend Wise are in town to spice up the second installment of Clear’s showcase match among some of the biggest names in the local football scene.

“I’m here to win. Last year, the result was 5-1. We will make it 6-1 this year,” the former Chelsea captain and Team Phil member said. “They may have the Berlin Wall (Cannavaro) on their side but we’re not worried.”

Revenge or repeat?

Phil and Wise will be joined by United Football League standouts Carli de Murga, Park Min-Ho, OJ Porteria, Jeffrey Christiaens, Chad Gould, and Chris Greatwich among others.

Team James, however, is not fazed as they will be backed up by no other than 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year Cannavaro, who got the nickname “Berlin Wall” for his stingy defending.

“We’re trying to build a backline and a stronger defense. I didn’t want to lose like last year,” said the Azkals captain and midfielder James.

James and Cannavaro’s squad will be comprised of Misagh Bahadoran, Jason de Jong, Yves Ashime, Saba Garmaroudi, Chieffy Caligdong and other high-caliber footballers in the local league.

“I feel sorry for you guys but we want to win,” Cannavaro quipped towards Phil and Wise.

The Clear Dream Match will kick-off 7:30pm on Saturday, August 24 at the University of Makati Football Stadium.
