PH girls oust Mozambique to reach Street Child World Cup finals

MANILA, Philippines – The competitors in the Street Child World Cup come from some of the most underprivileged regions of the Philippines. Without a stage to proclaim their names, they remained largely forgotten.

But with their win on Saturday night, the girls squad is one victory away from athletic immortality.

The girls squad of Team Philippines outlasted Mozambique, 1-0 in their semifinal battle in the 2nd Street Child World Cup on Saturday, April 5 in Brazil to punch their ticket to the finals.

Managed by Fairplay for All Foundation, the Roy Moore-coached squad scored the match’s only goal in the first half courtesy of Payatas FC’s Ronalyn, before holding fort in the second half to eke out the win.

The girls group topped Group 2 competition earlier with routs of South Africa and El Salvador, before thrashing England, 6-0 in the quarterfinals yesterday.

They will battle host country Brazil – which defeated El Salvador 5-0 in the other semifinal pairing – in what is expected to be an exciting finale, to be played in the 80,000-seater Fluminense’s Stadium in Rio De Janeiro. – Rappler.com
