MANILA, Philippines – Ahead of the upcoming 60th anniversary celebration of Asia’s football governing body in the country, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain arrived in Manila were the first delegates to arrive on Sunday, November 23.

The AFC, which was founded in Manila 60 years ago in 1954 amidst the second Asian Games, looks to go back to it roots in the country and celebrate one of the most prestigious events in Asian football.

From its 12 founding members during its inception, the confederation now boasts of a total of 47-members nations.

“We welcome Sheikh Salman and AFC member associations official delegates to the Philippines. We are excited to host AFC’s 60th anniversary,” Philippine Football Federation President Mariano Araneta said in a statement. 

 “For AFC to return to Manila after 60 years is an honor for the Philippines.”

General Secretary Dato Alex Soosay together with the officials of the AFC and 400 other delegates are expected to arrive later this week ahead of the awards gala at the Makati Shagri-la Hotel on November 30.

Additionally, FIFA President Joseph Blatter and General Secretary Jerome Valcke are also expected to arrive in the country to grace the event.

Big names in the country are also set to banner the awards gala as international Filipino singer Lea Salonga is set to perform while known composer Ryan Cayabyab authored the anniversary theme song of the confederation.

Former Binibining Pilipinas World Margaret Wilson and ESPN’s Jason Dasey will host the event. – Rappler.com
