MANILA, Philippines – A football player died from a freak accident as he slammed his head on a clubhouse wall after tackling an opponent and sliding off the pitch.

Ben Hiscox, a 30-year-old striker, was knocked unconscious right after slamming his head and instantly rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead three days later.

The incident took place during a home game for Stoke Gifford United in Bristol, where Hiscox’s team came away with a 4-1 victory by defeating the visiting Magotsfield Sports.

Following his unfortunate demise, 100 people gathered to pay tribute to the popular striker who was with the club since his teen years. Hiscox leaves behind a partner and a six-year-old step daughter, per the mirror.co.uk.

“He had been part of the club for a long time, since he was about 16. He was a total legend and one of the nicest guys I have ever met,” said Ben Bennett, the vice chairman of Stoke Gifford United.

“He just got on with everyone. It is a sad day for the club and we’re all thinking of him and his family.”

Member of Bristol Manor Farm FC – where Hiscox also saw action –  paid tribute to the fallen striker.

“He was the life and soul of the party and a brilliant guy,” said Manor Farm club secretary Andy Radford.

“He is one of the players that you just don’t forget; he was an absolute all-round great bloke.”
