WATCH: Rousey finishes Correia in 34 seconds to retain UFC title

MANILA, Philippines – Ronda Rousey made quick work of Bethe Correia to successfully defend her UFC women’s bantamweight championship for the sixth time in the main event of UFC 190 on Sunday, August 2 (August 1 in US) at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 28-year-old Rousey finished the job in just 34 seconds by delivering a vicious right hand to Correia’s temple, dropping her Brazilian opponent to the mat face first.

An Olympic bronze medalist in Judo, Rousey surprisingly had the upper-hand in the stand-up exchanges, which was thought to be Correia’s bread-and-butter, as the champion easily tattered the challenger with quick punching combinations while looking for a leg sweep.

“Instead of forcing a clinch, I planned to overwhelm her striking first so she would want to clinch, and that’s exactly what happened,” Rousey explained in her post-fight interview.

Rousey then pinned Correia along the Octagon’s fence and fired away with rights and lefts until she was no longer standing.

A right hand that connected on Correia’s head sent her crashing face down, compelling referee “Big” John McCarthy to pry Rousey off her defenseless foe.

There was bad blood between the two ladies as Correia defeated two of Rousey’s teammates on her way to calling out the 135-pound division’s queen and stirred up trouble by saying that Rousey should kill herself after losing to the 32-year-old native of Campina Grande, Paraiba.

Rousey took it personally as her father committed suicide when she was 8 years old.

“I hope that nobody really brings up my family anymore when it comes to fights. I hope this is the last time, “she stated.

Miesha Tate, the only woman that has made it out of the first round against Rousey, is expected to meet Edmond Tarverdyan’s pupil for the third time after scoring a unanimous decision victory over Jessica Eye this past July.

With a swift triumph over Correia, Rousey improves her professional record to 12-0 and notched her 11th first-round win.

On the other hand, Correia tastes the first defeat in her prizefighting career and downgrades her standing to 9-1.

Shogun Rua edges Lil Nog by close decision

Mauricio “Shogun Rua (23-10) took care of Antonio Rogerio “Minotouro” Nogueira (21-7) once again in their rematch at UFC 190, winning by unanimous decision with three 29-28 marks.

Nogueira had Rua reeling in the first round, where he cracked “Shogun” on the temple with a left hook and flurried for a potential stoppage.

However, Rua made a wise strategic decision early in round two, delivering a takedown inside the first 20 seconds that allowed him to recover further.

Nogueira jumped on a guillotine choke in the final 30 seconds of the bout and appeared close to finishing, but “Shogun” broke free and denied the advances.

In other matches, Stefan Struve (25-7) dominated former PRIDE heavyweight kingpin Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (34-9-1, 1 NC) in three rounds to earn the undivided vote from the cageside judges with three 30-27 scores across the board.

The seven-foot Dutch endured a hostile crowd while also fighting one of his MMA idols as he exemplified a consistent striking attack and takedown defense against the Brazilian fan-favorite.

Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (19-7-1) placed himself back on the winning track with a second-round stoppage of Australian heavyweight Soa Palelei (22-5).

An uppercut from Silva sent Palelei retreating to the fence early in the second frame, and the Brazilian did not miss the opportunity to follow up with knees and hard right hands as his opponent covered up.

As one sharp uppercut found its way through the defensive shell, Palelei collapsed to the mat, prompting Silva to polish it off and force referee McCarthy to wave it off at the 41-second mark of round two.
