WATCH: Treat Huey on playing in Davis Cup, growth of PH tennis
Fresh off an impressive showing in the 2016 Australian Open, Treat Huey returns to the Philippines to face Kuwait in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup Group II

MANILA, Philippines – Treat Huey has accomplished much on the tennis court around the world. The 30-year-old Filipino-American captured gold at the 2015, 2011 and 2009 Southeast Games, while making it to the mixed doubles semifinals and men’s doubles quarterfinals at the 2016 Australian Open this past January.

Most recently, he and Russian partner Max Mirnyi won the men’s doubles gold at the Mexican Open in Acapulco this past weekend.

Treat Huey’s next mission brings him to the Philippines, where he’ll banner the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team which faces Kuwait in a 3-day Group II tie beginning Friday, March 4 at Valle Verde Country Club.

Joining Huey will be Jeson Patrombon, Francis Alcantara and Ruben Gonzales, plus captain Karl Santamaria. They’ll face the Kuwaiti team of Mohammad Gharreb, Abdulrhaman Alawadhi, Abdulhamid Mubarak and Abdulhameed Alshatti and captain Adel Al-Shatti.

“We’ve had some good practices,” said Huey, rated no. 30 in the world in doubles. “It’ll be a good first round Davis Cup tie for us. Ruben, Jeson, Francis and I are ready to take on the Kuwait team so it should be a good weekend here Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”

The two sides met at a welcoming dinner at Valle Verde Country Club on Wednesday evening, March 2, snapping photos together and exchanging gifts in a show of sportsmanship between the nations.

In an interview with Rappler on Wednesday, Huey spoke about the growth in popularity of tennis in the Philippines, teaming up with Serena Williams at the International Premier Tennis League last year, and which tennis legend he’d most want to play against. – Rappler.com
