Lausa vs Uyenoyama targeted for PXC 55 in September
A reliable source within the organization tells Rappler that a 5-round title tilt between Lausa and Uyenoyama is in the works

MANILA, Philippines – Another championship clash is being penciled in for Pacific Xtreme Combat’s third Philippine event for 2016 as homegrown talent Jenel Lausa will defend his flyweight championship against American journeyman Darren Uyenoyama.

A reliable source within the Guam-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization told Rappler that a 5-round title tilt between Lausa and Uyenoyama is in the works and will be a co-featured attraction at PXC 55, which takes place at a yet-to-be-determined venue on September 3.

Lausa (6-2) captured the vacant PXC flyweight championship with a split decision victory over compatriot Crisanto Pitpitunge last January and became the fourth homegrown Filipino combatant to win a world title in MMA.

The 27-year-old native of Concepcion, Iloilo is also riding high on a 4-fight winning streak, which included a first-round submission win over Dean Bermudez in November 2014 and a one-punch knockout of Ernesto Montilla Jr in their June 2015 rematch.

Meanwhile, Uyenoyama (10-5) is a 36-year-old American fighter who has strutted his wares in various MMA promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Strikeforce, DEEP, and Shooto.

Uyenoyama had a triumphant PXC debut in October 2014, defeating Shane Alvarez via first-round technical knockout.

The 5-foot-6 Faito Tamashii Combat Club representative followed it up by carving out a split decision win over Japan’s Kentaro Watanabe in March 2015.

Uyenoyama was supposed to square off with former PXC flyweight titleholder Alvin Cacdac under the Bellator MMA umbrella last May, but the bout was cancelled due to an undisclosed reason.

In an interview with Rappler, Uyenoyama affirmed that he is still connected with PXC, but the veteran combatant admitted that he is clueless about his projected in-cage meeting with Lausa.

“Yes, I’m still connected. But this is the first that I’m hearing about [the] September [fight],” he said.

Even though he has an offer to compete in Bellator 5 months from now, Uyenoyama said he is more than willing to get inside PXC’s Terror Dome to challenge Lausa for the silver-plated strap.

“I have an offer from Bellator for November, but I am down [for the fight against Jenel Lausa],” he added.

Aside from the Lausa-Uyenoyama tussle, PXC 55 is heavily rumored to be headlined by a featherweight title showdown between current champion Alex Volkanovski and Filipino standout Rolando Gabriel Dy. – Rappler.com
