WATCH: URCC holds first-ever 3-on-3 MMA match
The intriguing match used an elimination format, where a fighter would get eliminated via knockout or submission. The last standing team would be considered the winner.

MANILA, Philippines – Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) featured a unique attraction that is definitely the first of its kind in Philippine mixed martial arts (MMA) – a 3-on-3 bout.

It was staged after URCC’s “Vindication” fight card, which took place at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City on Sunday, November 6.

The intriguing match used an elimination format, where a fighter would get eliminated via knockout or submission. The last standing team would be considered the winner.

If the free-for-all fight came to a 3-on-one scenario, the lone competitor in the opposite squad had the option to keep fighting or throw in the towel.

To ensure the safety of the 6 combatants inside the cage, 3 MMA referees were on hand for the bout, which had 3 3-minute rounds.

Arvin Chan represented the blue corner along with Jaypee Espinosa and John Rey Larena, while “Sugar Ray” Panchito Estroso served as the captain of the opposing squad together with Mark Palomar and Patrick Dos Santos.

Team Chan scored the first elimination as Espinosa dispatched Dos Santos by opening a gruesome gash on his forehead with a barrage of punches.

Although it was a 3-on-two situation, Team Estroso managed to even the playing field as Palomar eliminated John Rey Larena with a spinning backfist.

When things started to get intense between the two team captains, referees had to halt the action a couple of times. Chan landed an unintentional blow to Estroso’s groin.

Both teams finished the first round with two members each, but the ending of the opening salvo did not shy away from the true nature of the all-out brawl.

Estroso had a different strategy in the second round as he turned his attention to Espinosa after trading heavy bombs with Chan for the entirety of the bout.

As Estroso clobbered Espinosa with merciless blows, an exhausted Chan surprised everyone by not coming to the rescue of his teammate and opting to stand in front of Palomar.

With Chan reeling from fatigue and Espinosa feeling the damage of Estroso’s onslaught, referees decided to wave it off before the third frame and award the victory to the trio of Estroso, Palomar, and Dos Santos.
