The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has rebooked the featherweight title rematch between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes for the UFC 179 fight card on October 25 (October 26 in PH).

UFC president Dana White broke the news during the post-fight press conference and publicly confirmed that the championship clash will take place at Ginasio do Maracanazinho in Aldo’s hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The title tilt between Aldo and Mendes was originally penciled to happen in the main event of UFC 176 on August 2 (August 3 in PH) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, but the 27-year-old Brazilian was forced to withdraw from the marquee match-up after suffering a neck and spinal injury in training.

As a result of the unfortunate incident, the entire pay-per-view event was eventually scrapped due to the organization’s failure in finding a suitable headliner replacement.

UFC 179 features the second encounter between Aldo and Mendes. Both men first crossed paths in January 2012 at UFC 142, where the 5-foot-7 “Scarface” successfully defended his gold-plated strap via first-round knockout courtesy of a ferocious knee strike.

Aldo (24-1) was last seen in action at UFC 169 this past February when he took a five-round verdict over Ricardo Lamas.

On the other hand, Mendes (16-1) earned another shot at the top prize of the 145-pound weight class when he racked five-straight victories since his disappointing loss to Aldo, thumping the likes of Cody McKenzie, Yaotzin Meza, Darren Elkins, Clay Guida, and most recently Nik Lentz. – Rappler.com
