Former NASCAR racing champion Tony Stewart is reportedly being investigated by police after his car rammed into another driver and killed him on the race track at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park in Central Square, N.Y. on Sunday, August 10 Philippine time.

Video of the incident which has emerged on YouTube shows the other driver, 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr, leaving his vehicle after being run into the wall. Ward walked to the middle of the track pointing at Stewart’s car, appearing to try to interfere with Stewart when he was hit and flung through the air.

Jim Utter, a reporter who covers NASCAR for The Charlotte Observer newspaper, reported that Ward was dead on arrival at the hospital. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Department told FOX Sports that they are investigating the incident.

Witnesses said the three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Stewart, 43, did not appear to have been injured.

The incident happened during a Empire Super Sprints race which was being held on the eve of a NASCAR race at Watkins Glen International where Stewart was scheduled to compete on Sunday. Utter reports that Stewart has been cooperative with authorities and plans to go on with Sunday’s race.

The rest of the Empire Super Sprints races were cancelled after the incident. – Rappler.com with reports from Agence France-Presse
